On Friday for lunch, Food in the Fox decided to head to B.J. Clancy’s Grill & Bar, just south of highway 441 on the south side of Appleton. It was around 11:00 when we pulled up and to our surprise, the restaurant opens early and serves breakfast as well and a full lunch and dinner menu. There is also a full bar, but unfortunately, 11AM on a Friday is probably a bit to early for a cocktail.
The place reminded me of an old basement or office, as there were books and memorabilia all around the dining room. There was also a wall filled with framed Packer pictures from the 1990′s and also some framed pictures of more recent players, such as studly Clay Matthews. As the waitress sat us, we walked past a few other tables in the place, filled with people chatting over coffee.
The menu was mostly filled with American cuisine, everything from eggs benedict and oatmeal to seafood and other tasty dinner options. The prices were reasonable, ranging from $5 for an appetizer to $15 for a steak dinner that included a choice of sides. I was really eager to try something new, but I have a hard time swaying from the norm, when it comes to food, so I decided on the BBQ chicken wrap with a side salad (boring, I know).
Wax Paper, Circa 1969
Soon after we ordered, the waitress brought out our side dishes, my side salad and T ordered cottage cheese with pineapple. The salad consisted of onion, cheese, croutons, cucumbers and a side or ranch dressing. It was nothing fancy, but it was good. The waitress brought out our sandwiches and usually, I am interested in the food itself, but the paper that the wrap was on intrigued me. It was typical wax paper, but it resembled an old newspaper. The ‘newspaper’ was from 1969 and on it, it had all kinds of job posting, which were interesting, to say the least. Anyways, the chicken wrap was a pretty typical chicken wrap, not huge, but definitely enough to fill me up. The barbecue sauce was sweet and a bit tangy and the pickles that came on the side were a nice compliment to the meal. I will most likely be back to B.J. Clancy’s.
