Lou’s Brew & Cafe [Apple Harvest Salad]

Lou's Brew & Cafe Apple Harvest Salad

Today marked another long day for the Food in the Fox team. We were on the road by 6:45 heading to Oshkosh for an early morning event and wouldn’t wrap it up until a bit later in the evening. In between, we managed to sneak in a THRIVE Lunch at Lou’s Brew & Cafe located at 248 Wisconsin Street in Oshkosh. There may or may not have been a detour to the Caramel Crisp & Cafe mixed in there somewhere, too.

Short on Parking, Long on Taste

First off, there’s almost nowhere to park at Lou’s Brew & Cafe at 11:00 AM. Luckily, a delivery truck left and revealed the last empty spot in the lot just we were about to try to find a place to park on the street. Once inside, the ambiance is rather stark and the chairs a bit stiff, but to be fair Lou’s also has plenty of couches. There was also some construction going on upstairs which made the place a bit loud from time-to-time, but that was certainly not any fault of Lou’s Brew.

Apple Harvest Salad

Not all that long ago I had an apple harvest salad at Grapevine Cafe in Green Bay and loved it, so I figured I would give it another shot at Lou’s. I was pleasantly surprised. Lou’s didn’t strike me as the kind of place that served up a tasty salad, but my initial perception was proved delightfully wrong. As you can see, the salad was topped with tons of lightly candied walnuts, feta cheese, craisins, and a vinaigrette dressing.  Oh, and apples, which were fresh and crispy. I guess the real question is this: how did it compare to the Grapevine Cafe’s version? I would have to say very favorably. The taste was similar and Lou’s was a bit more generous with some of the toppings, but Grapevine definitely wins in the atmosphere department.

The price came in just under $10.00. Compare that to $11.59 at Grapevine Cafe, which also included bread, grapes, strawberries, and chicken. Service was very friendly, but slow. It’s possible the staff was not given a heads-up that the THRIVE Lunch group was about to descend on them.
