Stone Cellar Brewpub [Tuscan Chicken Sandwich]
We have heard nothing but positive things about Stone Cellar Brewpub, located at 1004 South Olde Oneida Street in Appleton, so we decided to give it a shot on Friday afternoon for lunch. So far restaurants close to or on the river have a pretty good track record, at least in my book.
We walked down the hall to where signs were pointing down to the restaurant and noticed a long line of people waiting to be seated, or so we thought. We stood in line for a few minutes, thinking maybe the restaurant was not quite open yet or that there was a wait to be seated. This seemed strange to me, because restaurants usually go on a wait Friday and Saturday evenings, not Friday afternoons. As patient as I am, I decided to ask the person next to me if there is normally a line for lunch on Friday. He said the line is for the people renewing their mug club membership. Ahh, okay. After we knew that we swiftly found our way ahead of all the people in line and made our way to the basement where we were greeted by the host.
The dark basement was lit up with all types of metal fixtures hanging from the ceiling and on the walls, which had an old, dingy, basement texture to them. The host lead us to a table and informed us of the soup and salad bar special that was currently available. Before looking at the regular menu, I grabbed the drink menu to browse at the homemade beer they currently had available. They had a Scottish Ale on tap which is my favorite type of craft beer, but I decided to go with water, since I knew it was going to be a long day. The lunch menu was filled with appetizers, sandwiches, burgers and pizzas. I also took a peek at the soup and salad bar, which is the only all organic soup and salad bar in Appleton. After some deliberation, I decided on the Tuscan Chicken Sandwich (grilled seasoned chicken breast topped with portabello mushrooms, pesto, tomato and provolone) with a side salad.
The waitress who took our order was very friendly and when I asked her for recommendations, she was not shy to rattle of her favorite items on the menu. My salad came out before the rest of the food and it was fresh and delicious. It was a typical garden salad with perfectly crunchy homemade croutons and sprouts, which typically are not part of a garden/side salad. The rest of the food came out just about when I finished the side salad. My sandwich was not over sized, but it was incredible. The bread was fresh, soft and topped with cheese. The chicken was flavorful and juicy but the best part of the entire experience was the homemade pesto. It was the best pesto I have ever had. EVER. I even told the waitress to give compliments to who ever makes the pesto.
The price was about average and the service was wonderful. I will definitely be going back, maybe next time I can try a few of their craft beers and try the all organic salad bar.
