Waverly Beach [Quesadilla Salad]
After the flip of a coin (and the persuasion of a $10 gift card) Food in the Fox decided on giving Waverly Beach a shot for a late lunch this week. I was there for the first time last week for a Fox Cities Chamber Business Connection after hours and the view was incredible, being it is right on Lake Winnebago. There were about a million lake flies blocking the nice view, but either way, it will definitely be a summer destination to keep in mind.
Not the Greatest Service, Right Away
Getting there between lunch and dinner was probably not the best move, but that just happened to be the case. The large bar has a equally large dining room next to it and that is where we decided to grab a bite to eat. Sitting there. For. What. Seemed. Like. A. Hour. Was. Painful. The bartender noticed us walk in, but did not bother to come grab a drink order or even really acknowledge us. But, after a while (and some stares from the older gentleman in the room playing poker) a lady came out of the kitchen and looked surprised to see people. It must be a really slow time of day for them, which is understandable.
Bar Food at A Good Price
Mozzarella sticks, burgers, wings, and homemade pizza were all regular menu items, but what caught my eye was the daily specials. The Friday Fish Fry is a Wisconsin tradition and Waverly seemed to be very accommodating to this tradition. On Fridays, they offer over 10 fish dishes from beer battered shrimp to a full seafood platter that includes Perch, beer battered shrimp, haddock and scallops. That and a beer pretty much sums up every awesome Wisconsinite’s Friday night dinner. I decided to go light, because I was aware of the free chicken wings that were going to be available a bit later that evening.
Big, Bad SW Salad (In a Good Way)
I have had a Quesadilla salad before, but it was not prepared like this. This was a bowl the size of a small island in the Philippines, filled to the brim with tomatoes, onions, corn, jalapenos, cheddar cheese, and grilled chicken with ranch dressing on the side. It also came with a buttery, garlicky toasted piece of bread. It was a great, fresh salad, but my only complaint is that the menu noted it came with tortilla strips on the top and this salad seemed to have slipped out of the kitchen without them. Not breaking the bank at $9, I cannot wait to return to Waverly for not only the food, but the summer fun that seems to surround the place. Oh, and when the waitress showed up, she provided spectacular service.
