Josef’s Gyros [Chicken Gyro]
Gyros are not often on the Food in the Fox menu, so that is one of the reasons we decided to try out Josef’s Gyros, a small restaurant tucked in an alleyway, just south of College Avenue in downtown Appleton. We have been there before, but left without ordering anything because of the limited seating available in the place. It was a nice day and there were a few small tables outside, so we decided to give it a go again.
The menu is not particularly large and includes mainly Greek food, with their specialty being the famous Gyros. They have regular gyro meat (lamb) and chicken gyro meat as well. If you have never been to a gyro place, check one out. They usually have a large piece of meat on a large post. The post then rotates as the person shaves the meat off of it. That is how they slice the meat so thin. I probably could explain that better, but if you are truly curious, go check out Josef’s. The meat is right behind the counter where you order.
Over Stuffed Goodness
After ordering, they brought out the food shortly and it looked pretty dang good. As you can see, the gyro was large and this was the ‘small’ size. It included pita bread, lettuce, cilantro, chicken, tomato, onion and a side of taziki sauce (which is a yogurt like sauce). It was impossible to eat this thing like a normal gyro, without first eating the top layer, as the pita it was in was not going to hold all of it together. Overall, a good gyro for about $7. Next time you are downtown, don’t forget about Josef’s when lunchtime comes around. And remember, seating is limited, so maybe get your food to go.
