Mi Casa [Chicken Fajita]
Mexican was on the menu for Food in the Fox and if Appleton lacks anything, it’s not Mexican grills. We’ve been to a few Mexican places in the past, but it still didn’t take long to spot one we have yet to try. That ended up being Mi Casa on Memorial drive, just down the road from the Valley Fair Center, home of the relatively new Copps grocery store (a huge improvement over the rundown Valley Fair Mall that used to occupy this area). Okay, sidetracked as usual.
Another Sizzling Chicken Fajita
You may recall the last sizzling chicken fajita. It was at El Azteca in Darboy and I was so easily impressed I actually took a short video of the sizzle. The chicken fajita that was delivered to me at Mi Casa was of the same type; a sizzling compilation of chicken, onions, and peppers on an iron skillet. It arrived with a side of warm flour tortillas, refried beans, rice, lettuce, and sour cream. As Mexican food goes, this was pretty much right up my alley. It was simple, it wasn’t deep fried or smothered in sauces, and even the refried beans were pretty good. I usually have to build a little protective moat around refried beans so they don’t contaminate anything else on the plate, but not today. There was more than ample chicken and vegetables to fill up the 3 or 4 soft flour tortillas that came with the meal, even after some of my fajita disappeared onto my neighbor’s plate.
As is usual at Mexican grills, chips were served as an appetizer along with salsa and an interesting creamy green hot sauce. I have no idea what the green stuff was, but it was good enough that I was dipping my fajitas in whatever was left over after the chips.
Overall, Mi Casa has a great review track record from around the web. The Mexican grill scored roughly 4.6/5 stars on Yelp, 5 out of 5 circles on TripAdvisor (and is ranked the #2 restaurant in Appleton behind Apollon), and it comes in with an 86% rating on Urbanspoon. This isn’t the greatest Urbanspoon rating, but it is also far from being the worse. We’ve seen some Mexican restaurants hovering around 60%, which is lower than Taco Bell. Ironically, despite my good experience, my cohort was not as impressed with her chicken taco salad.
