Recently, Food in the Fox has been to a fantastic German restaurant (OB’s Brau Haus) and a rather tasty Southern style restaurant (The Cozzy Corner), but we have not been to a Mexican establishment in the last few weeks. That is what brought us to Mi Casa on the south side of Appleton, close to the intersection of Highway 47 and Highway KK (Calumet Street). This is a small place and is somewhat camouflaged among a few other businesses, so if you go, make sure to look for the colorful sign on the west side of the road.
You Can’t Go Wrong With Free Chips & Salsa
The small restaurant is decorated in traditional Mexican/Spanish decor, with a few big sombreros and colorful pieces of cloth hanging from the walls. We walked in at about 1:00 and the place had a few people hanging around, finishing up their lunch. The server brought over chips, salsa and some other kind of dip (it was green, but not guacamole and of course I forgot to get a picture of it). The menu was pretty extensive with items such as tacos, nachos, quesadillas, enchiladas and other traditional Mexican dishes. They also had a vegetarian menu, which is something that you don’t see at too many restaurants.
$6 Taco Salad
I went with the taco salad lunch special, which consisted of ground beef or shredded chicken in a crispy flour bowl tortilla stuffed with lettuce, cheese, tomatoes and sour cream. The bowl was deep-fried, crispy and delicious. The rest of it? Average at best. Some of the chicken pieces were hard as rocks and for it being a salad, there were only a few shreds of lettuce. The upside? It was only $6. Next time, if there is a next time, I will try something different and hopefully have a better experience.
