One of the very few THRIVE Lunch events Food in the Fox has missed over the past 8 months or so happened to be at Michiels Bar & Grill in Menasha. Michiels (also known as Michiels of Menasha or the New Michiels of Menasha) is located on Appleton Road (Highway 47) near the intersections of Clover Street and Clovis Avenue.
Soup, Salad, Sandwich Bars for $8.99
As it were, Michiels has all the hallmarks of a supper club come bar and grill. It was dark. It smelled a little musty when I first walked in (but not bad). The bar was right up front. It was quiet. The staff was friendly. However, there were a couple of things that set it apart. The first was the menus. Michiels uses large colorful fold-out paper menus that double as take out menus. I’m not entirely sure why I thought this was such a novelty. I’m just easily entertained, I guess.
The second is much more relevant to what we’re here to talk about. Michiels has what they call an Express Lunch that runs between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. For $7.99 you can have at the soup and salad bar. For just $1.00 more you can add the sandwich bar to the list. Yep. A sandwich bar. The sandwich bar includes a variety of cold cuts and toppings and dinner roll sized buns. Regretfully, I did not give the sandwich bar a shot. The salad and soup bar itself was fine. It was small, typically stocked, and tasted pretty much like you would expect it to. The chicken soup was not overly salty but I easily “fixed” that by dipping the large homey croutons into it.
Speaking of bread, the appetizer for the Express Lunch includes warm rolls, a couple of miniature bite size muffin type things, butter, and cinnamon infused butter. All in all, not a bad way to start a meal considering what a sucker I am for bread (especially warm bread).
