Food in the Fox once again found itself in Green Bay for lunch and the destination was Fajita Republic on the East side of town. We’ve heard pretty good things about Fajita Republic over the past couple of months so we were a bit eager to give it a shot, even though I already had my Mexican food quota filled by eating at El Azteca not once, but twice in the past week or so.
Warm Tortilla Chips ‘n Chunky Salsa
Starting from the top, I liked the chunky salsa that came with the warm tortilla chips. If it was a tad thicker it would have been even better, but it was a nice change of pace from the blended up salsa we get at most Mexican restaurants. We easily polished off 3 or 4 bowls of salsa and two baskets full of chips. After the chips came browsing the menu.
The lunch menu contains roughly 16 items that range in price from $7.00 to $10.00. A few highlights on the lunch menu include Flautas (two golden-fried flour tortillas filled with chicken, pork, or beef), Tostadas (fried corn tortillas topped with refried beans, chicken, pork, or beef, cheese, lettuce, pico, and sour cream), and Tres Huevos al Gusto (three eggs prepared Mexican, ranchero, scrambled, or over easy served with rice and beans).
Something Different: Tacos Vegetarian
When it came time to order I opted for something a bit different this time around: the Tacos Vegetarian. The menu described Tacos Vegetarian as, “two flour or corn tortillas filled with roasted corn, sweet potatoes, squash, bell peppers, and grilled onions. Topped with creamy poblano sauce and cotija cheese. Served with cilantro lime white rice and black beans. $6.99.” I was a little put off by the appearance of the dish and the rice was dry and sticky and didn’t taste much like anything other than white rice, but the tacos themselves were an enjoyable mix of flavors without any one ingredient dominating the others. I’m not even a fan of sweet potatoes and found them quite good as prepared in the Tacos Vegetarian.
Service was a shade below average. The drinks went dry a couple of times and the waiter forgot to take off for a coupon. If not pressed for time we would have had it fixed, but we had to run so we paid our bill and hit the road.
