Basil Cafe [Tom Kha Gai]

Basil Cafe Soup

Basil Cafe has been on our “Eat Here” list for quite a while because we’ve heard nothing but good things about the Vietnamese eatery. On top of that, we missed the THRIVE Lunch that visited Basil Cafe just a few weeks ago. Well, today we made up for all that by making it a point to visit.

Bit Pricey, But Tasty, With an Awesome Ambiance

I’ll admit, Basil Cafe looks a little “beat up” and dated on the outside, but walking through the door reveals an unexpectedly upscale, warm, and comfortable interior. Not only was the interior nice, service was outstanding, the food tasty, and there was a huge jar of peanut M&Ms on the counter.  The only dubious part of the experience is that Basil Cafe is a bit on the high side when it comes to lunch unless you order soup (as I did). The entry-level for lunch entrees is $10.00 and prices go up from there.

I opted to take it light both on cost and calories by going with the Tom Kha Gai. This is chicken soup with a twist. Directly from the Basil Cafe menu, we have “cut chicken breast in a savory light coconut-chicken broth with lemongrass, mushrooms, galangal (SE Asian blue rooted ginger), kaffir leaves (leaves of the lime tree), onions, and mushrooms.” The two tastes that really jumped out of this thin-broth soup are the ginger and the lemongrass. Price for soup came in at $5.00 for the cup and $8.00 for the bowl. What you see below is the cup size.

I doubt Basil Cafe will be added to our regular lunch destination schedule, but it’s a definite contender for a revisit a bit later one of these evenings.
