The Grog [Steak Sandwich]
Food In The Fox traveled to Menasha today to try the newly re-opened bar and restaurant that has been around for many, many years. The Grog is located just a few blocks south of highway 114, on Broad Street. The place is located in a mostly residential area and would be easy to miss, if you are not looking for it.
Historic Building in the Heart of Menasha
How about a little history. Talking briefly, to the owner, she mentioned that the building is older than the city of Menasha itself. Wow! The place has lanterns with stained glass hanging throughout (which I found out is the original lighting for years ago) and there is a large bar with a few high top tables and a smaller dining room towards the back. The place was also had HUGE wooden pillars lining the ceiling and throughout the bar and dining room. A hurricane would not blow this old building over.
Limited Menu (For Now)
Looking at the menu, the first thing that came to my mind was, this is all there is? There were two sandwich options and a few a la carte items. The owner mentioned that they are adding new items to the menu within the next few weeks (including a few chicken items). They are famous for their steak sandwich and if you follow Food In The Fox, you know I am not much for a red meat-eater. Well, with today’s limited menu, I decided to try their famous steak sandwich with grilled onion and waffle fries. This was a bold change-up for me, but I figured, what the heck?
As the picture below highlights, this thing was massive and came with a pound or so of waffle fries. All of their buns and bread are from Manderfield’s and the all of their meat is from Haen’s (located in Kaukauna). I definitely tip my hat to them for getting their products from local sources. The verdict? Well, for not having had steak in probably a good year or so, it was delicious! Juicy, not overly salt, cooked medium well (the way I had asked) and smothered with onions that were bursting with flavor. The bun was fresh and the waffle fries were crispy and plentiful. The cost? For the sandwich basket, which includes a drink and fries, it came in at $8.75. Not bad.
Word on the street is their fish fry is also pretty dang good. Go check it out for yourself.
