Serious Burger [Wild Mushroom Burger]

burger

My first time at Serious Burger was a few months ago, and don’t you know, I ordered a chicken sandwich. I decided it was time to dive into one of their burgers that I hear about almost weekly, so that is exactly what I did yesterday. I not only ordered a burger, but a loaded burger with cheese curds to make sure I was hitting my maximum caloric intake* for the day :)

* Note to trainer, I didn’t eat it all by myself.

Trendy Place, Greasy (Tasty) Menu

The place is in a great location by the Fox River Mall and has a nice selection of burgers, sandwiches and appetizers. There is nothing particularly fabulous about the interior of the place. It is a small, trendy shop with NFL Network on a few of the flat screens hanging in the corners. The menu has a few healthy options, including a chicken sandwich and salmon sandwich, but overall be prepared to put a few extra miles on the elliptical after enjoying a meal here. Their burgers are made with 100% natural, hormone and antibiotic free, natural certified Angus beef and they are served on daily baked french brioche buns from Breadsmith.

Wild Mushroom Burger & Sides

Loving onions and mushrooms, it seemed only right for me to go with the Wild Mushroom burger, which consisted of roasted crimini mushrooms, caramelized onions, a sunny-side up egg, Swiss cheese and garlic aoili. I had them keep the egg off and as I bit into it, I was amazed at the taste. Not only did the beef taste fresh, the bun was soft and the vegetables were marinated to combine perfectly with the overall taste. The garlic aoili was not over powering like I have had at other restaurants. I did order the burger medium-well and it came out pretty well done, but even with it being slightly over cooked, it was still juicy.

The cheese curds were okay. You could taste that they were beer battered, but the for $4, they don’t give you many. There were maybe 15 curds in the small dish. Oh, and the Parmesan Truffle fries = TO DIE FOR! They are thin and crisy fries with just the right amount of garlic Parmesan seasoning.

Total damage cost wise? Right around $11 for the burger and cheese curds. The fries were not mine, but I had to try them. They rang in at $3.39 for a large side.

Milwaukee Burger Company [Turkey Avocado Salad]

long

Food in the Fox has never been to a restaurant on opening night, so let’s just say my expectations were less than high. Why? Well, having working in the food service industry in college, I have seen how awful the first night open can be. Between the staff not knowing the menu, the food taking hours to arrive at the table and the long wait times, I was not expecting much walking into Milwaukee Burger Company, located at 421 North Casaloma Drive in Appleton on Monday evening.

Made for Wisconsinites

The new sports bar/restaurant is located in the old Buffalo Wild Wings and has a similar type of atmosphere, with TV’s covering nearly every square inch of wall space. They have an extensive menu and beer selection and simply put, they WISCONSINIZED the menu. What does that mean, you ask? Well, they have about 40 beers on tap and the menu is filled with plenty of appetizers and entrees that include cheese and/or brats. Something that really caught my attention was the five, count them, five different kinds of cheese curds! Of course I had to have at least one…

Cheese Curd Balls

Wouldn’t you know it, I go to a burger place and order chicken. That being said, the picture below is of someone else’s meal (and yes, I stole one (or two) of those glorious looking mounds of deep fried cheese) and is an accurate reflection of how insanely large the cheese curds are. They were absolutely delicious, filling and greasy. For a brief moment, I felt as if I was standing outside a concession stand at some type of Wisconsin summer festival. They were comparable to fair cheese curds, which is saying a lot.

After inhaling a few cheese curd balls, the food arrived at the table. They made my salad a sandwich by accident, so that was kind of a bummer, but the salad came out of the kitchen a few short moments later. The Turkey Avocado Salad included fresh romaine lettuce topped with thick sliced turkey, a hard-boiled egg, tomatoes, red onion, avocado, and creamy avocado dressing. It was a huge salad filled with fresh ingredients and chicken that was not overly seasoned. Cost? It was $8.99 for this large salad.

Conclusion

They did awesome on their first night open to the public, at least from my point of view! The service was excellent and the food was quick and enjoyable. This place would be a great spot for any sports or beer fan, looking to watch the game while having a beer and burger. I am looking forward to my next stop at MBC.

Serious Burger [Grilled Chicken Sandwich]

Serious Burger Grilled Chicken Sandwich

I was under the impression that Serious Burger over by the mall in Grand Chute was a franchise. The logo looks corporate. The menu is focused. The interior is trendy and slick in that bland sort of way.  It looks, feels, and tastes like a franchise. So, franchise? Nope. Turns out, Serious Burger is local.

Not Feeling All That Serious About Serious Burger

I was happy to see that Serious Burger had a couple of non-burger alternatives on the menu. These alternatives included a portabella sandwich and grilled/crispy chicken sandwiches. I opted for the grilled chicken sandwich, which rings in at $6.49 with no sides items or drink. After ordering, we were given a number and went and sat down at our table, where we waited just shy of what felt like forever for our lunch to arrive. Going in we knew speed wasn’t the name of the game at Serious Burger, so that’s not too big of a thing.

However…

The presentation of the chicken sandwich when it did arrive was kind of neat. It was served on a small wooden cutting board with a knife stabbed through the top of the sandwich. Unfortunately, the grilled chicken sandwich was small, sloppy, and didn’t taste like anything other than the condiments that were slathered on it. The only time I noticed the chicken is when I bit into some nodule that was hard and … chewy. I’m hoping it was a chunk of cartilage. The bread was good, though.

Other than the presentation of the sandwich, there wasn’t much about Serious Burger that stood out. As mentioned, the decor was trendy, slick, and bland with goofy signs on the wall a la every generic franchise restaurant ever. Also, the space Serious Burger occupies is long and narrow with doors on both ends. This created a wind tunnel effect that is probably refreshing in the summer but made the place freezing now that we are in the middle of winter.

The verdict? I feel like Serious Burger has earned its 58% Urbanspoon rating and I highly doubt I’ll be back. It’s a nice concept, but it just feels too much like a generic franchise and if I’m going to head to a franchise for a burger or sandwich, it’ll probably be to Fuddruckers. Serious Burger is also seriously expensive. If you sat down for a full meal with a burger ($6.99), fries ($2.39), and drink ($2.39) you are looking at almost $12.00 and the prices just go up from there. Ouch.
