Island Sushi Buffet [Lunch Sushi Buffet]

long

It has been a while since Food In The Fox has had sushi and I bet you are just as sad as I am, looking through all the recent salads that have been on the menu. Well, Jet’s Sushi recently switched owners (and names) and we decided to give it a whirl, after hearing many good things about it. Island Sushi Buffet is the newest sushi establishment within the Darboy city limits.

Same Atomospher, Larger Selection

The place looks pretty much the same, with a few minor updates, such as new sushi boats and a few new coats of paint here and there. They even have a few of the same staff members. What did change, was the food selection. There was a much wider variety of food (above and beyond sushi), such as deep fried bananas, cheesecake ragoon, deep fried mushrooms, and other pastry like deserts. I love sushi, but gladly welcomed the new selection of items passing me by on the small boats. I must say while the overall selection was awesome, the sushi was somewhat blan. It all kind of tasted the same. Maybe we were just there at an off time?

Deep Fried-afied

This place may be the place to come when you are craving deep fried fair like food. I do not know what I enjoyed more; the deep fried green beans, deep fried bananas or deep fried mushrooms. They were all delicious! And the nice thing about it is that each serving size is relatively small, so you don’t have to feel too bad about eating the calorie laden morsels.

Friendly Atomsphere

The new sushi chef was very friendly as well. She was making small talk with everyone while rolling the sushi and explaining some of the food items. The other staff members were constantly bringing items out of the kitchen to place on the small boats. And the price? $12.99 for the lunch buffet. This seems about right, considering it is AYCE.

Go check it out and let me know your thoughts!

El Azteca [Speedy Gonzalez]

El Azteca Speedy Gonzalez

It’s not too often we have business meetings at Mexican restaurants, but there we were at 11:00 on a Monday morning (and missing THRIVE Lunch at another Mexican restaurant half way across town). As it turned out, our meeting ended up being cancelled at the last minute but we decided to stick around El Azteca for lunch anyway.

“The Fastest Mouse in all Mexico”

Food in the Fox has been to El Azteca a couple of times and we’ve written about it once before, complete with a sizzling chicken fajita video snippet. Since we had already managed to finish off about a bowl and a half of chips and salsa, we both opted for something cheap, quick, and comparatively low cal. The word comparatively here is key, since what you see below can hardly be called “low cal” with any sort of a straight face. That aside, that cheap, quick, and “low cal” option turned out to be the Speedy Gonzalez.

As you may remember, Speedy Gonzales was a sombrero wearing Looney Tunes character famous for being ”The Fastest Mouse in all Mexico.” How does this in any way relate to El Azteca’s menu item of (almost) the same name? When you order the Speedy Gonzalez, it arrives in five minutes or less. So, what is it? The Speedy is one taco, one enchilada, and a choice of rice or beans. The taco and enchilada can be had either with beef or shredded chicken. The taco with hard or soft shell. I opted for the shredded chicken in both.  In the photo below, the taco is wrapped in the foil to keep the soft shell moist.

As has been well established on Food in the Fox, I’m not a huge fan of traditional Mexican food so I don’t have a lot to say about the meal, but there was definitely nothing to complain about. If you are looking for something quick, inexpensive, and Mexican for lunch, it’s hard to go wrong with the Speedy. For less than $6.00 you get bottomless chips with a slightly spicy salsa and bean dip as an appetizer and the enchilada, taco, rice/bean combo.

Of course, one of the best parts about El Azteca is how colorful the place is. If you even half-way like Mexican food, it’s worth checking out.

The StoneYard Food & Spirits [Bruschetta]

The StoneYard Bruschetta

Food in the Fox was in that weird uncomfortable state of being that occurs when it’s a few hours after lunch yet still isn’t late enough for dinner. There was also one more meeting to attend to that day, which was keeping us hanging out in town bit longer than usual. Our solution? Find a place with wi-fi and something tasty to snack on. That place ended up being The StoneYard (read about their Authentic Gyro) in Darboy, right across the road from Pizza Ranch and right next door to one of our favorite spots, Jet Sushi

“Is that chocolate sauce?”

The StoneYard had bruschetta on the appetizer menu (along with several other tasty looking things) and a “hold us over ’til dinner” snack is exactly what we were looking for. If you are a regular Food in the Fox reader, you’ll know it’s a rare day when we see bruschetta on the menu and pass it up. Well, yesterday wasn’t a rare day. We saw bruschetta and went for it.

The StoneYard’s bruschetta is rather traditional (tomato, cheese, crostini, olive oil, etc.). The only things that really set it apart from other offerings is that the crostini (“little toast”) is long and thin instead of round, which means it was easy to eat, and the balsamic that StoneYard (read about their Grilled Chicken Cobb) uses is super thick. I actually thought it was chocolate sauce when I first saw it on the plate. In fact, I was so set on the idea that the balsamic was chocolate sauce I could have sworn I tasted chocolate when I first bit into it. It, of course, was not chocolate, but now I’m ever so slightly curious what chocolate sauce would taste like on bruschetta. Curious and likely horrified should I ever find out.

Overall, it was pretty good stuff and I would definitely not hesitate to order it again.
