Kaukauna Coffee & Tea [Chicken Panini]

big

In the midst of a snow storm, I decided to venture out to find a nice spot to get some work done and enjoy lunch. I ended up at Kaukauna Coffee & Tea, located on the beautiful (frozen) Fox River in the heart of Kaukauna. Food in the Fox has been here many times for coffee, but I have never tried anything on the menu that was not caffeinated, up until today.

Outdoor Patio*

Well, an outdoor patio doesn’t do much good in the middle of January in Wisconsin, but in the summer, this little hidden patio is a great spot to get some work done and enjoy one of their many beverages. It has about 5 small bistro tables, all with different chairs someone collected at garage sales over the years.  That last statement is not factual, but seems probable.

*At certain times of the year, the flies are horrible and will most likely eat you alive. You have been warned.

Chicken & Artichoke Panini

This place was packed for lunch! Maybe because schools were called off and this is the local hangout? I’m not sure. Either way, after looking through the menu, I went with the Chicken & Artichoke panini which included chicken breast, artichoke hearts, swiss cheese, red onion, and spinach grilled on flat bread.  It was simple and somewhat unique, as artichokes are not usually on the menu at local eateries. The chicken was seasoned nicely and the flat bread was slightly crunchy and chewy at the same time. All of the sandwiches also include a side of either chips, cookies or apples.

Total: Around $8.50 with tip for the panini, chips and water.

Out-O-Town Club [Grilled Salmon & Steamed Vegetables]

Out-O-Town

As common as the Friday fish fry is, Food in the Fox has never written about (or eaten) a typical Friday fish fry. Being I am from Wisconsin, this makes me just about as much of an outcast as being a Bears fan (note: loyal Cheesehead here). After getting a few recommendations, we decided to try Out-O-Town Club, just a bit north of Kaukauna, right off of highway 41.

Salad Bar and Fish

The place was packed at noon on a Friday and while walking past people to sit down, I couldn’t help but notice how good every ones food looked. Everyone was getting the fish fix, or so it seemed. They had a small salad bar setup in the middle of the room and people were eagerly filling their plates with salad bar items. Looking through the menu, I noticed they had a special fish menu that was only available Wednesdays and Fridays. They had perch, haddock, bluegill, salmon and pike. These fish specials came with a choice of potato or steamed vegetables and rye bread and coleslaw. The salad bar could be added for and extra $2.

AYCE Bread & Coleslaw

I went with the salmon, steamed vegetables and salad bar. The salad bar was good and quite filling. These people must have connections in Menasha, because they had these large, greasy crouton things, that were very similar to Menasha croutons (YUM). Considering how busy the place was, the food didn’t take long at all. The waitress brought out the fish and also a large bowl of coleslaw and a basket of bread. The fish was served with lemon and melted butter and was delicious, for the most part (I took home some of the fish and it was a little tough when reheated).

Overall, a nice place to go if you are looking for a large selection of fish. For about $11, I easily had enough to eat and enough left over for another meal.

Out-O-Town Supper Club [Baked Haddock]

Out-O-Town Baked Haddock

The Fox Valley has a number of “go to” places for fish on Fridays, but we recently learned that Out-O-Town Supper Club in Kaukauna was one of the go to places. As it just so happened, when we learned this (thanks Connie!) it was lunchtime and we were hungry, so naturally off to Out-O-Town we went.

You Can Get Half the Aquarium at Out-O-Town

Okay, on to the fish. Once of the very nice things about Out-O-Town is that you get a great selection of fish for a good price. On the menu for the Wednesday and Friday fish specials is perch (fried), pike (fried or pan fried), haddock (baked or deep fried), grilled salmon, and blue gill (fried). All of these are $8.95 with the exception of the haddock, which rings in at $7.95. I opted for the baked haddock (adventurous, I know), which came with tartar sauce, rye bread, coleslaw, and a baked potato. As you can see, the add-ons are served up family style and come to the table right away.

I’ll take everything one-by-one here. I’m not sure if that was rye bread or not, but it was nice and soft. The coleslaw was finely chopped and was one of the better examples I’ve had lately. The backed haddock was super firm and tasted great. The baked potato was a little small (like I needed the calories anyway) and a little overdone, but nothing to worry too much about. There was even a little stainless steel bucket of warm buttery calories on the plate to complement the pats of butter that came with the bread.

You can also add the salad bar for $2.00 extra, which I skipped this round.

Slightly Odd Hours

Out-O-Town’s hours bounce around a little bit. The supper club serves up lunch Tuesday through Friday between 11:30 and 1:30. Dinner gets served Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday between 4:30 and 9:30, Friday and Saturday 4:00 to 10:00, and Sunday and Monday between 4:30 and 9:00. The place closes down on Mondays in June, July, and August.
