Pappa’s Cafe [Breakfast Burrito-Olé]

Pappa's Cafe

Pappa’s Cafe was the destination for this morning’s THRIVE Coffee, which is a casual early morning networking group that meets every Tuesday. This was the first time I visited Pappa’s Cafe and I must say there’s a fair bit more to it than what meets the eye from the road.

Don’t Judge A Dining Room By Its Cover

This Neenah family-style restaurant is very easy to miss. In fact, of the six THRIVE’rs who came to coffee this morning exactly zero of them had been to Pappa’s Cafe (and that’s EXACTLY why we do THRIVE!). Like the others, I was surprised by the size of the interior. Driving by Pappa’s Cafe, it looks like it seats about 8 people maximum. Turns out, there is a proper dining room off to the side and an even larger one farther back.

Breakfast Burrito-Olé Stuffed With Hash Browns

The menu had a few interesting choices, including a “Garbage Plate” which I was tempted to order just so I could say it. However, I went with the Breakfast Burrito-Olé, which is “fluffy scrambled eggs in a tender flour tortilla with grilled onions, peppers, tomatoes, hash browns and salsa on the side, with choice of meat.” It also came with some sour cream. Seems simple enough, but I immediately noticed something a little unexpected when my breakfast was plunked down in front of me. The meat (in this case, ham) was on the side and the hash browns were rolled into the breakfast burrito. I had expected the opposite to be true.

As far as taste, everything was quite good, especially considering the fairly-sized burrito rang in at just $5.95. The tortilla was nice and soft and there wasn’t anything ‘juicy’ about the fillings, which is something I’ve encountered in the past elsewhere. Speaking of juicy, the ham wasn’t. From my point of view that’s no bad thing. I’ve always tended to prefer pretty much all meat except steak to be on the dryer side (dry smoked turkey… love it!). On the opposite side of the spectrum, my neighbor’s American fries and bacon looked like they had been made in a vat of 10W-40.

Finally, the coffee was no Molly’s, but that didn’t stop me from having 3 or 4 cups. Overall not a bad breakfast.

Zuppas [Curried Chicken Salad Wrap & Lobster Bisque]

Zuppas in Neenah

A few weeks ago, I paid roughly $8.00 for two coffees and a bagel at Zuppas. This set my mind into “too expensive” mode so every time Zuppas came up as a lunch destination I shot it down. However, we happened to be in the area and I begrudgingly agreed that we could head to Zuppas for lunch. I mean, I had seen the food on more than one occasion and it always looked great, so I figured what the heck.

Something Yellow, Something New, for $8.00

I really didn’t see anything on the menu that jumped out at me as “I need that for lunch” so I opted to go with the combo, which allowed me to pick any two of the following three selections: any half sandwich or half wrap, a cup of soup, or a salad. The combo also came with homemade potato chips and a pickle spear.

Since I was feeling somewhat brave that morning, I went with the curried chicken salad wrap and lobster bisque. The curried chicken salad wrap was filled with a rather unappetizing  looking yellow chicken salad. Fortunately, the shredded and curried chicken tasted way better than it looked. The flavor was unique (kind of sweet) and solid enough to hold up when dipped into the lobster bisque. Speaking of, the lobster bisque may have been the highlight of the meal. It wasn’t the hearty seafood chowder offered up at Little Chicago, but it had a nice lobstery flavor to it and worked great for dipping the chips.

Total price was around $7.95 before tax, title, and license and I left more-or-less satisfied with my choice. Turns out, if you watch what you get, Zuppas is no more pricey than any other good lunchtime destination. I doubt Zuppas will become one of my regular stops, but it is definitely worth a shot if you are in Neenah and looking for something a little different and higher-end for lunch.

Zuppas [Thai Chicken Salad]

BG

So here’s the story about Zuppas. Food In the Fox has been here before. Last time, we ordered two coffees and a bagel and it came to right around $8, which was a bit more than most places would charge for a couple of coffees and a bagel. The bagel and coffee were good, but nothing extraordinary. Since then, we have avoided Zuppas because it seemed a bit over priced. Well, we were in the area and decided to give it another shot.

Cafeteria Style

Walking up to the cafeteria style counter, I passed refrigerator with soups and other dishes for sale. There was a pan of lasagna for $35, which seemed a bit steep for the pasta dish, but it could have easily served 15 people. Proceeding to the counter, I looked through the menu, which included sandwiches, wraps, paninis, salads, soups and other miscellaneous items. The people in front of me each ordered small cups of homemade macaroni and cheese. It made my mouth water.

Thai Chicken Salad W/Awesome Curry Vinaigrette

I went with something a bit lighter, a Thai Chicken Salad. This was grilled chicken with mandarin oranges, crunchy noodles, almonds, coconut and pineapple on greens with a curry vinaigrette. I was a bit skeptical of the curry vinaigrette at first, but it was AWESOME! The whole salad had a great combination of flavors that easily beat out many other salads I have had recently. Even the coconut (which I am not a huge fan of) added great texture and flavor to the dish. The pineapple was sweet and even though the chicken was cold, it was juicy and not overly seasoned or salty.

Round two at Zuppas was much better than the first round. The salad rang in at $9.75, but it was worth it. This may not be a place to eat at everyday, but to enjoy on occasion. Oh, and for you wino’s out there, Zuppas also serves wine :).
