Bléoni’s Restaurant & Pancake House [Breakfast Bagel]

LG

Breakfast today was off the beaten path at a place called Bléoni’s Restaurant & Pancake House. I had a bit of a hard time finding the breakfast establishment this morning, probably because I am not familiar with the Metropolis of Sherwood. It is tucked away in a strip mall off of Highway 114, not far from High Cliff State Park. Anyways, this small restaurant was very bright and colorful upon walking in at around 10:00AM on a Wednesday morning. I am amazed at how many ‘family’ style restaurants are located around the valley. There must be a couple hundred and they all seem to be doing pretty good.

Typical Breakfast Food WITH Hollandaise Sauce

This small cafe had about a dozen tables scattered throughout as well as a breakfast bar. The young waitress was very prompt in coming to pour a cup of coffee as I looked through the menu. The menu was a typical breakfast menu. Eggs done this way and the other, served with hash browns and toast,  but something did catch my eye. Eggs Benedict is not my favorite dish, but bring on the Hollendaise sauce. I could eat Hollandaise sauce with just about every meal. But many restaurants do not offer it with their breakfast specials. It’s probably better most restaurants don’t have it, because it is pretty much liquid fat.

I decided on the breakfast bagel, which was a toasted white bagel with cheddar cheese and a few scrambled eggs. It comes with meat, but I decided to go meatless for breakfast. It was good and the Hollendaise sauce that came on the side was a tasty dipping sauce for the breakfast sandwich. Breakfast, with coffee, came to around $7, which isn’t too bad, considering Food in the Fox has found some pretty spectacular breakfast specials in the Fox Valley.

Bléoni’s Restaurant & Pancake House [Breakfast Bagel]

Bleoni's Restaurant & Pancake House

Bléoni’s Restaurant & Pancake House lives in that little strip mall in front of the car wash on Highway 55/114 in Sherwood. The little family style eatery used to be known as the aptly named Sherwood Family Restaurant, and for the most part Bléoni’s (pronounced “bley-oh-nee’s”) is a typical small town diner.

Eggs, Sausage, and Cheese Breakfast Bagel

This morning I had flashbacks to the days when I would religiously devour the Steak, Egg, and Cheese Bagel at McDonald’s. It’s been so long since I’ve been to a McD’s that I ‘m not even sure if they have that thing anymore. Given I have no plans on stepping foot inside of a McDonald’s ever again, I may never have the opportunity to find out. Anyway, where this all was leading is that this morning I ordered a breakfast bagel. Known as the Bléoni’s Special, the sandwich is two scrambled eggs with sausage and melted American cheese on a toasted bagel. Nice and simple.

It’s been a while since I’ve hunkered down for a breakfast bagel of any sort and I have to say, I quite like them. Of course, what is there not to like? Bread, grease, eggs, sausage, cheese? All those yummy high calorie things in a compact little package. However, it’s probably a good thing that this calorie bomb detonated after a good five mile walk at High Cliff State Park. Calories aside, the Special was also a bit pricey, especially after yesterday’s über inexpensive breakfast down at Old Glory Cafe in Kimberly. The tab for two of these little buggers with a side of hollandaise sauce and one coffee came in at over $13.00.

On a side note, Bléoni’s has slightly off hours. The restaurant is open 7 days a week as follows:

  • Monday – Thursday / 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM
  • Friday / 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM
  • Saturday – Sunday /  7:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Frogg’s Ice Cream [Ice Cream With Crunch]

Frogg's Ice Cream

Saturday was a good day. Why? Frogg’s Ice Cream in Sherwood (right on Highway 55) opened for the season!  But if you are a Frogg’s fan, you probably already knew that.

I drive Frogg’s on an almost daily basis and I have to say, temptation strikes nearly every single time. There was no temptation Saturday. There was no temptation because I KNEW I was going to end up at Frogg’s. So, in preparation I spent the morning doing a 6.2 mile walk around High Cliff State Park while patiently waiting for the ice cream shop to open at noon. At roughly 12:30 I was sitting behind Frogg’s perusing the menu. A couple of minutes later I had a vanilla dish with crunch. A couple of minutes after that it was gone (but not before sending a pic to M for the jealousy factor).

Frogg in a Blender

Frogg’s has all kinds of specialty creations (a Frogg in a Blender is like a Dairy Queen Blizzard), but one of the nice things about Frogg’s is that you can mix and match pretty much however you would like. Want a custom made sundae? Just order a dish and top it with whatever you want. A personal — and rather decadent — favorite of mine is a simple vanilla or twist dish topped with crushed Whoppers candy and whipped cream. Caramel and pecans is also a tasty one. As are the chocolate dipped cones. And the crunch dipped cones. And… well, you get my point.

Sizes for the cones and dishes run large; the item in the photo below is a small, which cost $2.00. On a related note, Frogg’s is cash only, so come prepared. On an unrelated note, BW’S Pizza and Wings right next door is now open. Eat your dessert first at Frogg’s and then take a pizza home for dinner!
